Minor in Chinese Teaching (23–39 hours*)

This minor is designed to prepare students to teach in public schools. A teaching minor may only be received by students graduating with a teaching major. In order to graduate with this minor, students are required to complete Utah State Office of Education licensing requirements. Program Requirements

  1. Grades below C- in professional education courses or content courses will not be accepted in the teaching major or teaching minor. Teacher candidates must have a cumulative 2.85 GPA in teaching major and teaching minor courses to qualify for student teaching.
  2. Complete the following prerequisite courses (or equivalents):
      CHIN 101 : Beginning Mandarin.
      CHIN 102 : Beginning Mandarin.
      CHIN 201 : Intermediate Mandarin.
      CHIN 202 : Intermediate Mandarin.
  3. Complete the following:
      CHIN 301 : Third-Year Mandarin
      CHIN 302 : Third-Year Mandarin
      CHIN 326 : Introduction to Chinese Linguistics.
      CHIN 345R : Chinese Culture.
      CHIN 377 : Chinese Language Teaching Procedures.
  4. Complete one course from the following:
      CHIN 321 : Selected Readings of Modern Chinese.
      CHIN 322 : Selected Readings of Modern Chinese.
  5. Complete one course from the following:
      CHIN 443 : Modern Chinese Literature.
      CHIN 444 : Contemporary Chinese Literature.
  6. Before applying to student teach in the major, complete the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) examination with a minimum level of Advanced-Low in order to be granted Utah state licensure.

*Hours include courses that may fulfill university core requirements.
