Recent Publications:

  • The Sting of Life: Three Contemporary Japanese Novelists (Columbia University Press, 1989)
  • Three Modern Novelists: Soseki, Tanizaki, Kawabata (Kodansha International, 1993)
  • He co-edited The Showa Anthology (Kodansha International, 1985).
  • Editor of Japanese Fiction Writers, 1868-1945 and Japanese Fiction Writers Since World War II, two volumes of the Dictionary of Literary Biography, (Bruccoli Clark Layman, 1997).

He has published six translations of works by the Japanese Christian novelist Endo Shusaku, including: The Samurai and Scandal; the most recent, Deep River, was published by New Directions in 1995. He served as literary advisor for the Milwaukee Repertory Theater's recent production of a stage adaptation of Endo's "Silence" by American playwright Steven Dietz. He is currently co-editing a two volume anthology of modern Japanese literature for Columbia University Press.”
